Testing for a failing switch
Click the left button 30 to 50 times at a normal pace inside the test box. A healthy mouse records zero chatter events. Even one or two is a switch that has begun to wear, and it gets worse quickly once it starts.
Chatter tends to appear first on the left button, because it takes most of the wear, and usually between 18 and 36 months of regular use depending on the switch.
What the other tests tell you
Button coverage
All five standard buttons should register. If a side button never appears, check your mouse software before assuming hardware failure, since remapped buttons often send keyboard shortcuts rather than mouse button events.
Scroll wheel
Scroll slowly in both directions and watch the counts. A wheel that jumps backwards while you scroll forwards has a dirty or failing encoder. This is usually fixable with contact cleaner.
Click speed
The five second test is mostly for curiosity. Most people land between 5 and 8 clicks per second. It is worth running before and after cleaning a mouse, since a sticky switch shows up as a lower rate.
Chatter or a software problem?
If double clicks happen in one application only, it is software. If they happen everywhere and this test records chatter events, it is the switch. If this test records nothing but you still see double clicks, check your operating system double click speed setting, which can make a deliberate double click register unintentionally.
Common questions
What is double click chatter?
Chatter is when a single physical click registers as two. The metal contact inside the switch bounces as it closes, and once the contact wears the bounce lasts long enough for the computer to read it as a second click. It is the most common way a mouse fails.
How does this test detect it?
It measures the gap between consecutive presses of the same button. The fastest deliberate human double click is around 80 to 100 milliseconds. Anything under 50 milliseconds is mechanical bounce, not something you did.
My mouse chatters. Can I fix it?
Sometimes. Contact cleaner sprayed into the switch can restore a worn contact for a few months. The permanent fix is replacing the switch, which costs a couple of dollars if you can solder. Many gaming mice also carry a two year warranty and chatter is a recognised warranty fault, so check that first.
Why can I not test DPI here?
No browser exposes mouse DPI. Nothing in the web platform reports it. Any site claiming to read your DPI directly is either estimating from movement or making it up. A real measurement needs software that talks to the device, or a calibration where you move the mouse a known physical distance.
My back and forward buttons do nothing on this page.
They should register inside the test box, where the default browser navigation is suppressed. If they do nothing there either, they may be mapped to something else in your mouse software rather than sending standard button 4 and 5 events.
