Sound is only coming from one side

One silent channel is usually a balance setting or a partly inserted plug rather than a dead speaker. Here is how to tell the difference.

One working channel and one silent one narrows the problem considerably, because it rules out everything shared between the two: the output device, the system volume and the driver all affect both sides equally.

Check the balance slider first

Every operating system has a left-right balance control, and it is the single most common cause of one-sided sound. It is also easy to move by accident, since on some systems it responds to a stray drag in the sound settings.

Find the balance or stereo balance control in your sound settings and confirm it is centred. Some audio interfaces and headset applications have a second balance control of their own, which overrides the system one.

While you are there, check whether mono audio is enabled. It does not cause one-sided sound, but it does make stereo content sound wrong in a way people often describe the same way.

Check the plug

An analogue plug that is not fully inserted makes contact on some conductors and not others, which produces exactly this symptom: one channel, or one channel plus a thin distorted version of the other.

Push the plug in firmly until it seats. If there is a rubber ring or an adapter in the way, remove it and try again.

The same applies to a plug that is fully inserted but worn. Wiggle it gently while a tone plays through the silent side. If sound cuts in and out, the plug or the socket is the fault rather than the speaker.

Swap the sides

This is the test that actually isolates it.

If you have two speakers on separate cables, swap them: put the left speaker on the right cable and the right speaker on the left cable.

  • The silence moves with the speaker: that speaker or its cable has failed.
  • The silence stays on the same side: the problem is the port, the socket, or the computer’s output, and the speakers are both fine.

With headphones, the equivalent test is a different pair through the same socket.

Before concluding anything about hardware, confirm the audio itself is stereo.

Some recordings are genuinely one-sided, and old or badly encoded files can carry silence in one channel. Running a dedicated channel test removes that variable, because it generates the tone itself rather than depending on a file.

When it is the speaker

If balance is centred, the plug is seated, the silence follows the speaker when you swap sides, and a different source behaves the same way, the driver or its amplifier has failed.

On a powered speaker pair this often affects only the passive speaker, which is fed from the active one, so check that cable specifically. On a laptop it usually means the speaker or its connector on the board, which is a repair rather than a setting.

Why do my channels sound swapped?

Swapped channels are a wiring or settings problem, never a hardware failure. Check that speaker cables are in the matching sockets, that a headset is not on backwards, and that no channel swap option is enabled in your audio interface or sound settings.

One side is quieter rather than silent.

Check the balance slider first, since a partial offset produces exactly this. If balance is centred, a partly inserted plug can also attenuate one channel rather than killing it. If both are fine, the speaker itself may be failing, which usually gets worse over weeks.

It only happens with headphones.

Then the headphones or their cable are the problem, not the computer. Headphone cables fail at the plug and at the point where they split, because those flex most. Try a different pair through the same socket to confirm.

Mono audio is enabled. What does that do?

Mono combines both channels and sends the same signal to each side. It is an accessibility feature, useful if you have hearing loss in one ear or use a single earbud. If it is on by accident, stereo content will sound flat and centred rather than one-sided, so it is worth checking if the stereo image seems wrong.
