Webcam resolution

Also called 1080p · 720p

Resolution is the number of pixels in each frame a camera sends, such as 1920 by 1080 for 1080p. A camera often runs below its maximum if an app asks for less or a USB port can’t carry the full stream.

The webcam test asks for 1080p and reports what the camera actually delivers.

In practice

A camera’s maximum resolution is only part of the picture. Many apps request a lower resolution to save bandwidth and a camera on a shared USB connection may fall back to less than it can do. Lighting matters more than resolution for how sharp you look in a call.

How to check

The webcam test asks for 1080p and reports the resolution the camera actually delivers. If it reports less than the camera supports, try a different USB port directly on the computer and close other apps that might be using the camera.
