HID
Also called human interface device
HID is the standard most keyboards, mice and controllers use to talk to a computer over USB or Bluetooth. Because it is a standard these devices usually work without a special driver.
In practice
HID is why you can plug almost any keyboard, mouse or controller into any computer and have it work immediately. The device describes itself and the operating system knows how to read it. Extra features such as RGB lighting or macro keys usually need the maker’s own software on top.
How to check
If a basic HID device such as a keyboard or mouse doesn’t work on a new computer, try another USB port and another cable before installing anything. Then test it in the matching Hardware Detective test. Standard keys and buttons should work without any driver.
