Analog axis

Also called analogue axis · axis value

An analog axis reports a range of values rather than on and off. Each stick has a horizontal and a vertical axis. Browsers report each one from -1 to 1 with 0 at the center.

Analog triggers work the same way on a scale of 0 to 1. A trigger that never reaches 1 at full press is out of calibration or physically blocked.

In practice

Analog axes are what make gradual movement possible: walking slowly by pushing a stick partway or easing onto a car’s accelerator with a trigger. When an axis misreads, the result is drift on a stick or a trigger that never reaches full speed. Both come from the sensor reading the position, not from the buttons.

How to check

The controller test shows each stick axis from -1 to 1 and each trigger from 0 to 1. Move each one slowly through its full range and watch for smooth changes. Jumps, dead spots or a range that stops short point at a dirty or worn sensor. A resting value away from zero is drift.
