Xbox controller tester (Series X|S)
Test every button and trigger on your Xbox Series X|S controller and measure stick drift in the browser. See how much drift is normal and what fixes it.
Browsers deliberately hide connected controllers until you press a button on one. This is a privacy measure, not a fault. Connect your controller, press any button and it’ll appear here.
Why the Xbox Wireless Controller drifts
The Xbox Wireless Controller uses potentiometer sticks. Each stick position is read by a contact sliding along a resistive track and that contact wears the track a little with every movement. Worn areas around the center make the controller report a small movement when nobody is touching the stick. That is stick drift and on this design it’s a matter of when rather than if.
Rest the controller flat and press Measure stick drift above. Readings up to 0.05 are normal tolerance. Past 0.10 most games can’t hide it with their deadzone. The drift guide explains the bands.
How browsers see the Xbox Wireless Controller
Browsers on Windows recognize this controller over USB and Bluetooth and report every standard button, both triggers and both sticks in the standard layout. It is the controller browsers support most consistently. The Share button sits outside the standard layout and usually doesn’t appear. The proprietary Xbox Wireless connection only works through a console or the Xbox Wireless Adapter, which Windows then presents to the browser like a wired pad.
Known issues with the Xbox Wireless Controller
Stick drift from potentiometer wear
Like the DualSense, this controller uses potentiometer sticks that wear a contact track with use. Drift across Xbox controllers led to legal action against Microsoft in the US. It shows as a small steady reading on one axis with the stick untouched.
Disconnects and erratic input from low batteries
The controller runs on two AA batteries or an optional battery pack. As the voltage drops it can disconnect briefly or report glitchy input before the battery warning appears. Test with fresh batteries or a USB cable before deciding anything else is wrong.
How to fix it
Plug the controller in with a USB-C cable to take batteries and wireless out of the picture, then measure drift here. Update the controller firmware through the Xbox Accessories app on Windows or an Xbox console, since updates have fixed connection problems on this model. If a stick still reads above 0.05 at rest, claim the warranty if you are inside it. Out of warranty, replacement stick modules are sold for this controller. Fitting one takes desoldering and the Xbox Accessories app includes a recalibration tool for the replaced stick.
Replacing a stick: soldered to the main board on most units. Replacing a stick needs desoldering and the Xbox Accessories app can recalibrate the new one. The stick drift repair guide covers cleaning and replacement in more detail.
Warranty
Microsoft’s limited warranty on an Xbox controller bought on its own has commonly been 90 days, while a controller that came in the box with a console follows the console warranty, typically one year. Check the terms for your region and purchase before assuming you are out of cover.
Xbox Wireless Controller questions
Why does my Xbox controller work in the browser only over USB?
Bluetooth on this controller needs an up to date firmware and a Bluetooth adapter Windows supports well. The proprietary Xbox Wireless mode needs the Xbox Wireless Adapter. If USB works and wireless doesn’t, update the controller in the Xbox Accessories app and try pairing again.
Can I test the impulse triggers here?
The trigger positions can be tested because they report as analog values from 0 to 1. The separate rumble motors inside the triggers can’t be driven from a web page. The main rumble motors can be tested where the browser supports vibration.
Does the Elite Series 2 have the same sticks?
No. The Elite Series 2 has a different, more adjustable stick assembly and its own history of faults, mostly bumpers and stick tension. This page covers the standard Xbox Wireless Controller sold with Series X and Series S consoles.
Why do some games show PlayStation buttons with my Xbox controller?
The game is choosing the prompts, not reading them from the controller. Steam Input or another remapping layer can make a game think a different controller is connected. Turn it off for that game to get Xbox prompts back.
