Controller not working in Steam? How Steam Input changes things

Steam Input can make almost any controller work in any Steam game and it can also cause double inputs or a stick that moves the mouse. Here’s how to set it up.

Steam has its own controller system called Steam Input. It sits between your controller and the game and translates what you press into something the game understands. When it works you never think about it. When it doesn’t, you get a controller that works everywhere except one game, presses that arrive twice or a stick that suddenly moves your mouse cursor.

What Steam Input does

Many PC games only support controllers that present themselves as an Xbox controller through XInput. A PlayStation, Switch or generic controller often isn’t recognized at all.

Steam Input fixes that. It reads your controller directly, applies a layout and then presents the result to the game as a standard controller. It can also map controller buttons to keyboard keys and mouse movement for games with no controller support.

That translation layer is also where most problems come from.

Step 1: rule out the hardware

Open the controller test with Steam fully closed. Press every button, pull both triggers and move both sticks.

  • Everything responds: the controller and its connection are fine. The problem is in Steam or the game.
  • Nothing responds: start with the controller not detected guide. Steam can’t fix a controller the computer can’t see.
  • One input doesn’t respond or a stick sits off center: that’s a hardware fault Steam can’t cure. Check how much drift is normal.

Test with Steam closed because Steam can change what other apps see when it’s running.

Step 2: turn on support for your controller type

Open Steam and go to Settings, then Controller. Steam lists support options by controller family: PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and generic controllers.

  • Turn on the option for your controller type if it’s off.
  • For generic or unusual controllers, turn on generic gamepad support and follow the prompt to map the buttons once.

Steam should now show your controller by name in the same settings page. If it shows the wrong type, remove it and connect it again.

Step 3: set Steam Input per game

Steam Input can be forced on or off for each game. Right click the game in your library, choose Properties and open the Controller section.

  • Use default settings: Steam decides based on the controller and the game.
  • Enable Steam Input: Steam always translates. Use this for PlayStation and Switch controllers in games that only support Xbox controllers.
  • Disable Steam Input: the game reads the controller directly. Use this when a game supports your controller natively, including features like the DualSense adaptive triggers that Steam’s translation can’t pass through.

Common problems and fixes

Double inputs. Menus skip two items per press or a jump fires twice. The game and Steam Input are both reading the controller. Disable Steam Input for that game or turn off the game’s own native controller option.

The stick moves the mouse on the desktop. That’s Steam’s desktop layout. It applies whenever Steam is running and no game is in focus. You can change it in the controller settings under the desktop layout or turn it off completely. It can also make a browser controller test look odd, which is another reason to test with Steam closed.

Wrong button prompts. The game shows Xbox buttons for a PlayStation controller. With Steam Input on, the game only sees a generic Xbox style controller, so it shows Xbox prompts. Some games have their own prompt setting. Otherwise disabling Steam Input lets games that support PlayStation controllers natively show the right symbols.

Works in Steam games but not other launchers. Steam Input only applies to games started through Steam. Add the game to Steam as a non-Steam game and launch it from there.

Works in the browser but not in the game. If you don’t use Steam at all, the browser versus game guide covers the other ways games choose which controllers they accept.

When to leave Steam Input off

For an Xbox controller in a game that supports it, Steam Input adds a layer that does nothing useful. Leaving it at the default or off avoids double inputs and keeps the game in charge of vibration and prompts.

For everything else Steam Input is usually the easiest way to get a controller working in a PC game. Most problems come from it and the game both trying to handle the same controller. Pick one per game and they go away.

Common questions

Why does my controller move the mouse when Steam is open?

Steam applies a desktop layout to controllers while Steam is running and no game has focus. By default that layout uses a stick as a mouse and buttons as clicks. Change or disable the desktop layout in Steam’s controller settings if you don’t want it.

Why do I get double inputs in some games?

The game is reading your controller directly and Steam Input is sending its own translated version at the same time. Each press arrives twice. Turn Steam Input off for that game in its controller properties or turn off the game’s own controller support.

Do I need Steam Input for an Xbox controller?

Usually not. Almost every PC game supports Xbox controllers directly. Steam Input is most useful for PlayStation, Switch and generic controllers that games don’t support natively.

Can I use Steam Input with games I didn’t buy on Steam?

Yes. Add the game to your library with the option to add a non-Steam game, then launch it from Steam. Steam Input applies to it like any other game in your library while Steam is running.
